Fault finding is a diagnostic job. The symptom, whether it is a breaker that trips, a circuit that is dead, lights that flicker or an RCD that drops out when the kettle goes on, tells you very little on its own. The cause could be a damaged cable, water in an outside socket, a failing appliance, a loose neutral, a nail driven through a wire during a previous job, or borrowed neutrals from an old lighting alteration.

We isolate the circuit, split it down and test section by section with insulation resistance, continuity and loop impedance measurements until the fault is located rather than suspected. That approach costs less than replacing parts in sequence and hoping, and it ends with an explanation of what was actually wrong.

## Why intermittent faultsget worse, not better
An intermittent fault is usually a deteriorating one. Moisture tracking across a damaged cable, a terminal that is loosening as it heats and cools, insulation breaking down where a cable is compressed: all of them fail more often as time passes, until the circuit is off permanently or something overheats.

The knock-on damage is what turns a small bill into a large one. Loose neutrals cause voltage swings that kill electronics. A live conductor faulting to earth inside a wall can char cable over a run, so the repair becomes a full circuit replacement. Water in an external socket can put the whole downstairs on an RCD that will no longer hold.

Meanwhile, people live around the fault: an extension lead from another room, a circuit left switched off, a freezer plugged into the only socket that still works. It functions until the day it does not, and the emergency version of the same repair costs more and happens at a worse time.

In detail

## How electrical faultsare actually traced
Faults fall into a small number of categories, and the test that identifies each one is different. A dead short between line and neutral shows as a very low resistance reading and trips the breaker instantly. An earth fault shows on insulation resistance testing between conductors and earth, and typically trips an RCD or RCBO. An open circuit shows on continuity testing and leaves part of a circuit dead. High-resistance joints and loose terminations show as heat, voltage drop under load and sometimes as a fluctuating loop impedance reading.

The instruments do the work: an insulation resistance tester at 500V for cable condition, a low-resistance ohmmeter for continuity and R1+R2, a loop impedance tester to confirm the fault path is low enough for protection to operate, an RCD tester for trip times, and a clamp meter to measure standing earth leakage, which is how a circuit that trips only when several appliances are running gets explained. Thermal checks and a careful visual inspection of accessories fill in the rest.

Splitting the circuit is the key technique. A ring final circuit is broken down at accessible points so half the run can be eliminated at a time; lighting circuits are split at junctions and switch drops; borrowed neutrals from earlier alterations are found by disconnecting one circuit and watching another lose its neutral. Once located, the repair is either a remade termination, a section of cable replaced or re-routed, or a faulty accessory or appliance removed from the installation.
