Every part of it lives outside, which changes the specification: enclosure ratings, cable type, gland selection, mounting and protection all have to suit permanent exposure.

The functional aims are usually simple: get from the drive to the door safely after dark, make the garden usable in the evening, light the house without glare into the windows, and deter opportunists at the boundary. Achieving them without a garden that looks like a floodlit yard is a matter of positioning, output and colour temperature.

Outdoors, RCD protection, cable type and IP rating stop being optional details. What happens if it's left

## Why outdoor electricsfail first
Outside installations fail because water finds the cheapest part. An indoor-rated socket in a porch, an unglanded cable entry, a light fitting with a perished seal, moisture gets in, tracks across live parts and trips the RCD, usually taking indoor circuits with it. In Manchester's climate that is a matter of months, not years.

Buried cable is the expensive mistake. Standard twin and earth run through a garden with no armour, no depth and no warning tape is a fault waiting for a spade, and repairing it means digging up whatever has been laid on top since. If it is on an unprotected circuit, it is also a genuine shock risk.

Then there is what unlit outdoor space costs in practice: steps and level changes that are hazardous in winter, a driveway where you cannot see the ground, a dark rear boundary, and a garden that is unusable for half the year despite the money spent on it. None of it is complicated to solve; it is only expensive to solve twice.

In detail

## Cable, ratingsand control outdoors
Supplies leaving the building are normally run in steel wire armoured cable, sized for load and length so voltage drop over a long garden run does not leave a workshop underperforming. Buried runs go in at appropriate depth with warning tape above and mechanical protection where they cross drives or hard standing; surface runs are clipped or installed in conduit on protected routes. Cable entries are properly glanded at every enclosure, and outbuildings are given their own small distribution board with local isolation so the building can be worked on without killing the house.

Equipment is selected by position and exposure. IP44 is a practical minimum for sheltered external positions, with higher ratings for anything exposed, at ground level or subject to washing down; ground-recessed and in-ground fittings need suitable ratings and drainage. Materials matter as much as ratings: stainless or powder-coated corrosion-resistant bodies, marine-grade fixings on exposed elevations, and gaskets that can be replaced rather than sealed with silicone. Special locations such as hot tubs and swimming pools have their own zone requirements for equipment and protection, and are treated accordingly.

Control is what makes external lighting pleasant. Layered circuits, low-level path and step lighting, uplighting on planting or facade, spill light on seating, higher-output security lighting on separate switching, mean the whole garden is not on one switch. PIR sensors are positioned to see approach rather than passing traffic, with sensitivity and time set after dark; photocell and timer control handles dusk-to-dawn operation; and warm colour temperatures around 2700K keep planting and brickwork looking right rather than blue and clinical. Commercial versions of the same work cover car parks, yards, signage and rear access, where output, uniformity and vandal resistance take priority.
